Vignettes of Avalon

Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve posted. Lots of stuff to get up here from the winter months… Here are a few short videos shot with a GoPro Hero 3 Silver the kids gave me for Christmas. Edited mostly on iPad 3, iMovie or Pinnacle Studio. They’re 1080p so remember to enable HD.

A great big sea in Middle Cove, near St. John’s, Newfoundland, after snow storm. Feb 22, 2013. About 10 minutes from my house. Shot it on an iPad then zoomed in later. There was no way I was going down there to get closer… good place to get killed. Many have.

Shot while I was killing time waiting to pick up the kids… A drive through the Upper and Outer Battery to The Narrows, the aptly-named channel connecting St. John’s Harbour to the North Atlantic. Walked out as far as Chain Rock but soon realized I was woefully under-dressed for the temperature and wind. After leaving the Battery, the final shot is driving up Prescott St. behind a guy who isn’t familiar with the way Rawlins Cross works, past Bannerman Park and out of Downtown. My hometown is definitely one of the most inspiring subjects I could ever shoot or photograph.

A recent afternoon spent in search of great photos on the “Irish Loop”, the southern shore of the Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland, Canada. First stop is a small beach in Tors Cove, then a drive out over Ferryland Downs past the Colony of Avalon excavation (founded 1621), as far as the narrow isthmus connecting the last point of land. Sadly, the road was blocked on the other side (plus, I didn’t fancy walking across with the gale-force wind) but some wonderful views facing north towards those barrier islands as the cannon stands guard against ghosts of pirates past, and south into the late afternoon sun towards Aquaforte, Renews and beyond. The temp is about 2c and the wind is northwest about 80kmh… not much steady video here:)

February killing time waiting for the kids… was a great day at Quidi Vidi Lake, St. John’s, Newfoundland. A quick 2 minute video of walkers, joggers, ducks and prison.
